Scotland and the Catalan choice

Published on

Right after the announcement of the election results in Catalonia some famous politicians and activists voiced the support for the Catalans and their legal choice for self-determination and independence. The results of these elections actually made the leaders of other European countries worry about the future of other troublesome regions of the European Union and the destiny of Europe itself. First of all, it is worth mentioning that Scotland and Northern Ireland are not going to abandon the idea of independence and sovereignty, especially in the situation when Scottish and Irish people express solidarity with the Catalans and perceive the latest events in Catalonia as an inspiring example for the steps to be taken towards independence.

The last year’s referendum on Scottish independence had devastating results for pro-independence activists, though we shouldn’t exclude the fact that the results could have been rigged. The position of SNP on this issue is rather suspicious as the SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon always says that there can be hardly second chance to hold a referendum in the nearest future, although the arguments for “pro-delay independence” are unconvincing and groundless.

The former first minister of Scotland Alex Salmond told RT that he supported the Catalans in their choice and determination to fight for independence. It is interesting, what does he think about the goal of Scottish people to live in an independent country? Did the elections in Catalonia become a motivation for him and SNP members to encourage Scottish people to take the initiative and demand from the authorities one more possibility to vote for independence? Unfortunately, he may never give the answer on this question.

At this critical moment it is particularly irrational for Scottish people (and the self-proclaimed pro-independence politicians) to stay away from the current events in Catalonia and give up the attempt to follow the Catalan example here and now. At this very moment Scotland can get unprecedented support from Catalonia and other national liberation movements and activists all over the world. Those who say that there should be no external interference in the process of struggle for independence are wrong in one: the independence process of any region should be supported by the world community or at least by the prominent political players. Solidarity and unity of different nations have always been a strong motivation and incentive for people to move towards independence. That is what Scottish people should take into consideration.
