It has the roots in the very historical beginning of the United Kingdom as a state. So the creation of the empire started with the brutal taking by force of both Ireland and Scotland.

We all remember the results of the Irish struggle for their independence. That was a rather successful example of devoted struggle for real sovereignty. Their struggle has lasted for seven centuries but they managed to win their independence only in the 20^th century. First, the territory of Scotland is very rich of mineral resources like gas and oil fields in the North Sea.  It also has a developed infrastructure, cultural and historical heritage, recreation resources. Moreover, Scotland has its own history and traditions of political culture and self-government. The modern Scottish Parliament as the heritor of the ancient parliament from early 13^th century is in action from 1999. In case of some terroristic attack or big war conflict the neighborhood with British nuclear weapons represents the real risk of extinction for Scottish population.
