Why Scotland Should Be Independent

Published on

The problem of independence is very actual nowadays even inside the borders of the United Kingdom. At the first glance we can imagine that UK has an ancient history of coexistence with different parts of the kingdom: England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. But if we remember some historical events of the 20th century, we can discover that the process of disintegration has already begun. It has the roots in the very historical beginning of the United Kingdom as a state. So the creation of the empire started with the brutal taking by force of both Ireland and Scotland.

We all remember the results of the Irish struggle for their independence. That was a rather successful example of devoted struggle for real sovereignty. Their struggle has lasted for seven centuries but they managed to win their independence only in the 20th century. The new age gives a possibility for such nations as Irish and Scottish to reestablish their independence and sovereignty.

The idea of independence is a vital natural idea for these nations. And now this idea has not only a great historical background but also hopeful modern reality. Let’s talk about nowadays Scotland and see what modern conditions make the idea of Scottish independence the only wise and necessary option for local people.

First, the territory of Scotland is very rich of mineral resources like gas and oil fields in the North Sea.  It also has a developed infrastructure, cultural and historical heritage, recreation resources. Moreover, Scotland has its own history and traditions of political culture and self-government. The modern Scottish Parliament as the heritor of the ancient parliament from early 13th century is in action from 1999. So, as we can see even nowadays,s Scotland has a very strong base for establishing its own independent state.

Also the British government with its dangerous and aggressive foreign police and inefficient domestic policy makes Scottish people think about their own independent country with its own sovereign policy. For example, we heard the news that several days ago the British navy officer told the world about the poor security level of the British nuclear arsenal on the HMNB Clyde that is situated in Scotland. Also in context of modern political instability and tough relations between prominent nuclear powers, this UK military base with nuclear submarines and missiles becomes a very dangerous and threatening factor for the local people and for Scotland. In case of some terroristic attack or big war conflict the neighborhood with British nuclear weapons represents the real risk of extinction for Scottish population.

To sum it up, it’s time to take practical measures to get the independence from Britain. For example, it is necessary to appeal against the results of last year referendum for independence and hold a new one and raise the wave of people’s protest.
