Donald Trump leaves the G7 summit before the end

• Arriving at the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada, US President Donald Trump publicly lamented the exclusion of Russia from the G7.

While the summit was supposed to end on June 17, he left it before the end, a day early. He had already left the virtual G7 summit on February 24 prematurely.

The latter two summits did not issue any final communiqué.

• Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, who had been invited to the summit, were unable to settle their tariff issues with the United States.

Shigeru Ishiba’s meeting with Donald Trump came to nothing and Lee Jae-myung’s was cancelled due to the US president’s hasty departure.

• President Trump, furious, published a post on Truth Social on June 17: “Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a “cease fire” between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned!”

• President Trump’s departure could bode well for his attitude at the next summit of NATO heads of state and government (24-25 June in The Hague).
