Turkey vowed to respond duly to US president Joe Biden’s recognition of the events of 1915 as a genocide.

Back on Saturday Joe Biden said the US honors the victims of the Meds Yeghern so that the horrors of what happened were never lost to history.

He became the first US president to officially recognize the alleged Armenian genocide.

Immediately after Biden’s declaration, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry denounced him in “strongest terms,” saying the move “does not have a scholarly and legal basis, nor is it supported by any evidence.” 

The Ministry also summoned the US ambassador to Ankara to voice its protest against Washington.

Meanwhile Turkish Defense Minister said that the declaration by the US president may disrupt peace in the region.

Relations between Turkey and US have been in trouble especially after US imposed sanctions on Turkey for purchasing Russian- made S400 missiles.

Since Saturday, protests were held in front of the US consulate in Istanbul with demonstrators denouncing the statement and calling on Ankara to cut ties with Washington.
