Matteo Berrettini of Italy has reached his first career Grand Slam semifinal after edging past Frenchman Gael Monfils at the US Open.
Berrettini took another step in his breakthrough season after beating Monfils 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6 and 7-6 on Wednesday.
The Italian had to summon all his might against the Frenchman, who saw off four match points before succumbing after three hours and 57 minutes.
Berrettini thus became the first Italian man to reach the US Open semifinals in 42 years. He will next meet the winner of a later match between Rafael Nadal and Diego Schwartzman for a place in Sunday's final at Flushing Meadows.
