China and Russia to save DPRK

Published on

Russia and China are concerned about possible escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula and are working out proposals for its prevention, according to the Russian Ambassador to China Andrey Denisov.

“Moscow and Beijing urged Washington and Seoul to stop the annual military exercises, or at least to limit their scale,” the diplomat said . He added that “it is important to keep the situation in a regulated framework,” that’s why Russia and China urged the US, Japan and South Korea “to evaluate the real military capabilities of the DPRK.”

Moscow is holding talks on this issue also with Pyongyang, including at a high level, the Ambassador said. The DPRK has stated that it is concerned primarily about its own security and attempts of Americans to destroy the existing regime in the country.

Russia and China condemn the military preparations, which have been defiantly carried out by the Americans and to a certain extent are being imposed on their allies, while using the nuclear tests of North Korea as a pretext. Denisov says there is no military necessity in the missile defense system THAAD to prevent nuclear threat from North Korea.

In early July it was reported about the decision of the Seoul and Washington to place a land-based missile defense system THAAD on the south of the Korean Peninsula. According to them, the complex will be used solely to protect the Peninsula from the growing nuclear and ballistic potential of North Korea”. However, it can observe the greater part of the territory of China and the Far East of Russia, which satisfies neither Moscow nor Beijing.

So China is not only involved in discussion of possible measures to prevent the conflict, but also is considering ways to reduce trade and economic relations with South Korea, though in the list of economic partners of Soth Korea Beijing is ranked first. China accounts for 24 percent of South Korean exports, that is more than $140 billion.
