On 5 February it was announced that Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus’ would meet with the Pope Francis. The leaders of the largest Christian confessions will meet in Cuba on February 12.
The religious leaders will discuss the problems of Christianity, and, as noted, will sign a common agreement.
According to the head of the Duma Committee for public associations and religious organizations, Yaroslav Nilov, the meeting between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis is “an epoch-making event”.
“This is a historic, epochal event, and an important step in the development of inter-confessional relations,” Nilov said.
It was noted that during the meeting very important decisions for all Christian world would be taken.
“Knowing about the charisma of both religious leaders, I believe they will make a number of conclusions, quite principled and tough, in some way radical, with emphasis on the existing problems, including those in the spiritual world. That will determine the beacons that are to be pursued in the development of interstate, church-state and interchurch relations,” Nilov said.
According to the Deputy, a historical meeting is dictated by the growing threat of terrorism in the world and the growing influence of Muslim radicalism.
“This historic event is dictated by what is happening in the world. Obviously, nowadays the whole Christian world is under the threat of radical islamists who blatantly try to justify their atrocities as “the struggle for the faith”. Terrorism is a threat to all humanity and the entire Christian world,” Nilov added.
