The Community Solution to the Climate Crisis

Published on

The Most Censored News with Lee Camp hosted by comedian/ writer/ raconteur/ provocateur/ saboteur Lee Camp is a twice-weekly look at the most censored stories within corporate media hosted by the new video platform Behind the Headlines – a MintPress video project that is 100% viewer supported.

Camp both brings to light stories that are (intentionally) ignored by the corporate media and digs deeper when the mainstream media only reports on the surface-layer reality. Having been a professional stand-up comic for 20 years, a writer for The Onion, and the host/head writer of Redacted Tonight, Camp is also uniquely suited to bring humor to these topics.

Climate chaos is here right now. It’s not something off in the future like fast food restaurants selling bug patties, emotionally fulfilling sex with robots, or a lab-created dinosaur accidentally getting loose in a shopping mall. New floods, wildfires, and droughts hit communities around the world everyday but the most obvious solutions to this crisis are rarely even discussed.

So what can be done?

To begin with, the Biden administration could actually fund action on climate change. Congress recently passed $840 BILLION for the war machine. They sent $52 Billion to semiconductor chip manufacturers and President Biden is proposing $37 Billion to fund our impressively brutal police nationwide.

Wow! It sounds like a lot of money is being thrown around. So how much is Biden willing to spend to make sure we can live on this planet for a few more years?

“Biden announces $2.3 billion commitment for climate crisis,” read a July NewsNation headline.

So they’re allotting 365 times as much money to the war machine as they are offering for the climate crisis.

Their negligence forces us to ask what you and I can realistically do to address climate change because Western governments have decided that they aren’t going to do it.

Obviously the big solutions are important. Yes, delete ExxonMobil from the world. Yes, switch to entirely green energy yesterday. I’m just saying a lot of that isn’t feasible for you or me to do on our own.

However, here’s something you and I can do: plant trees.

Planting millions of trees won’t solve climate change by itself, but it will help. Trees do a lot more for the climate than just absorbing carbon dioxide and emitting oxygen. They also act as shade on a hot day, making cities more livable during heat waves.

New York City is a Northern city without much tree cover and during the summer its concrete feels like lava. Now imagine how that will feel with the extreme temperatures being predicted over the coming decades.

Trees also hold the soil in place, which might be a good thing if you don’t want to come back home after a downpour and find your house is in the neighbor’s yard.

Climate change means more flooding and more flooding means more landslides. By strengthening the soil, trees protect our homes from landslides and their slightly more terrifying cousin, mudslides.

There are some big things that need to be done to slow climate change, such as ending the Military Industrial Complex which emits more carbon dioxide than many countries. But while we’re waiting for that to happen, we should also be making our communities more livable and sustainable by planting and protecting the planet’s original carbon sequestration technology – the tree — as widely as possible.

Watch the above video for the full report.
