US Open: Djokovic tops Londero

Published on

In tennis, defending Champion Novak Djokovic has advanced to the 3rd round of the US Open after defeating the Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero in straight sets.

The World Number 1 who's looking for his 3rd grand slam crown of the season at Flushing Meadows, dominated the match in the opening set and finished it 6-4. Londero gained considerable strength in the 2nd set, but the Serbian Ace used his experience and ended it 7-6 in his favour.

The 16-time grand slam winner regrouped in the 3rd and easily finished the 3rd set 6-1 to wrap up the match in 2 hours and 12 minutes. Djokovic also notched his 71st victory at the season's final Grand Slam, tying his former idol and 5-time champion Pete Sampras at the US Open. He will next meet the winner between American Denis Kudla and compatriot Dusan Lajovic.

Meanwhile, 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer came from a set down to defeat Bosnian Damir Jumhur and advance to the 3rd Round. After falling 4-nil behind, the Swiss Maestro conceded the 1st set 3-6 to the world number 99. This was Federer’s 2nd consecutive sluggish start, having also dropped the 1st set against Indian qualifier Sumit Nagal in his opener.

However, the World number 3 rose to the occasion once more on Wednesday and rallied to claim the next 3 sets 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. Next in Federer's path is the winner of a later match between French 25th seed Lucas Pouille and Britain's 58th-ranked Dan Evans. 5-time US Open winner who lost to Novak Djokovic in last month's epic 5-set Wimbledon final, hasn't fallen in a Slam 2nd Round since 2013 at Wimbledon.

Finally, 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori continued his bid for a 1st Grand Slam title after fending off Bradley Klahn of the US 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and 7-5 on Wednesday. World Number 6 who needed 5 match points to seal the win, will next meet either Australian Alex de Minaur or Chilean Cristian Garin.
