Over tennis news, Rafael Nadal has opened his campaign at the US Open with a commanding win over John Millman of Australia.
The 33 year old Spaniard who's bidding for a 4th title at Flushing Meadows, needed 2 hours and 9 minutes to see Millman off 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 18-times Grand Slam champion broke early in each set, never allowing the Australian to take a lead.The 2nd seed saved all 3 breakpoints he faced while converting 5 of the 15 chances he earned. Awaiting Nadal in the next round is Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis, who overcame Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in 4 sets.
Dominic Thiem’s latest shot at a Grand Slam glory came to an abrupt end at the US Open following a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano. The 4th-seeded Austrian hit 14 aces and committed 48 unforced errors with more than half of the mistakes coming from his normally reliable backhand wing.
On the other side, the 30-year-old Italian save 9 out of the 10 break points he faced to book his next round spot in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Up next for Fabbiano is Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
Meanwhile, 6th seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the 2nd round after surviving a 5-set clash against Moldova's Radu Albot. The German got off to a good start to take the 1st TWO sets 6-1, 6-3 but Albot roared back to level the match at 2 sets each and sent it to a decider in which Zverev triumphed 6-2. He hit 49 winners and fired 9 aces to wrap it up after 3 hours and 10 minutes. Frances Tiafoe of the US is his next opponent.
And Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out of the US Open after suffering a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 loss against Russia’s Andy Rublev. The Greek 8th seed who lost for the 2nd successive Grand Slam opening-round struggled with cramps during the 4th set of a grueling 4-hour encounter and accused the umpire of having preferences after he was hit with a point penalty for a time violation in the final set. His defeat handed the Russian a next round meeting with Zhill Simon of France.
