The Sabancaya volcano erupted on Monday (August 05) spewing a massive column of ash and volcanic material high into the sky over southern Peru.

According to local media, the eruption reached approximately 3,500 meters (11,483 feet) above the top of the mountain's crater, and the ash could spread over 30 kilometers in the direction of the Huambo district.

Sabancaya is currently going through a period of eruptive activity which started in 2016, local media reported.

Sabancaya is a stratovolcano located in the Peruvian department of Arequipa. It is one of Peru's most active volcanoes.
