In cycling, Ilnur Zakarin has claimed stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia 2019, with Jan Polanc holding on to the overall leader’s pink jersey.
In the mountainous 196 km trek, Zakarin kept his pace with Friday’s breakaway trio until the final climb, when the 29-year-old Russian decided to put on a solo effort, off to his first victory in almost three years.
Mikel Nieve trailed the Russian by a 35 second gap as the runner up, while fellow Spaniard Mikel Landa improved his overall status, courtesy of his third place finish.
In the general classification, two of the favorites, Primoz Roglic and Vincenzo Nibali, crossed the line together with 2 minutes and 57 seconds off the pace.
At the end of stage 13, the Slovenian Polanc still leads the standings, with Roglic and Zakarin respectively in second and third.
