The US invasion of Afghanistan: the second-longest war in US history is one of the costliest and deadliest conflicts the United States has ever fought. What began as an operation to wipe out the Taliban and its off-shoot, al-Qaeda from Afghanistan following the September eleven attacks is now in its seventeenth year; with no end in sight. While the war was waged to kick the Taliban out of Afghanistan and replace them with a stable, central government, official US figures show the Kabul government only controls more than 56 percent of the countrys districts.
