Russia developing advanced weapons based on ‘new physical principles’

Russia is developing promising weapon systems based on new physical principles, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Friday.

“You know well that planned measures are under way to implement the program of the technical upgrade of the army and the navy. The share of modern military hardware in the troops is constantly increasing. It will equal over 50% by the end of 2016,” the defense minister told a scientific and practical conference on improving the system of inter-departmental interaction.

“Active work is underway to create promising armament systems based on new physical principles. The system of troops’ control at various levels is being improved and the issues of servicemen’s social protection are being solved qualitatively,” Shoigu said.

This year, this system’s resources were primarily aimed at ensuring the operation of the air and naval task forces of the Russian grouping in Syria, implementing the program of the troops’ rearmament, and also providing assistance to regional authorities in eliminating emergency situations, the Russian defense minister said.

“The functioning of this system is based on the use of the most advanced domestic technical solutions. The available possibilities allow supplying necessary information to the country’s military and political leadership and the bodies of troops’ operational control,” Shoigu said.

“New physical principles” are a notional term intended to highlight that the weaponry’s destructive factors are based on processes and phenomena earlier unused for military purposes.
