The spokesman of Russian President, Dmitry Peskov, believes that it is impossible to draw parallels between the collapse of the Soviet Union and Brexit. At the same time, the spokesman of the Kremlin points out that for the EU it is “a turbulent time”.

“Russia is interested in the stability of the European Union, in its rapid development, predictability, and readiness to cooperate with Russia,” the spokesperson of the President said on Monday. He urged not to draw parallels between the collapse of the Soviet Union and the UK’s decision to leave the EU.

“Russia is a country that has gone through very difficult periods in its history, including the collapse of the Soviet Union. Many generations clearly remember the period of the collapse of the Soviet Union, this period of uncertainty. Of course, it would not be wise to draw parallels between the collapse of our country and Brexit, but they are definitely experiencing a turbulent, confusing and unpredictable time, and we know that in the history of different countries sometimes they have to go through hardships,” Peskov added.

According to the spokeman, “whether UK stay in the EU or not, this does not exclude bilateral dimension of our relations”. “Traditionally, we advocate the restoration of our relationship in those areas in which the British scaled down cooperation.”
