Russian marine was killed in Syria while protecting a humanitarian convoy in Homs Governorate.  At the expense of his life sergeant Andrey Timoshenkov stopped a car with a bomb by opening fire with small arms. In the end, the soldier was fatally wounded, so the doctors were unable to save his life. Later Russian Defense Ministry announced the death of a marine.

The tragedy happened on 15 June. The Ministry reports that the car was driven by a suicide bomber. “When the car exploded, Andrey got fatal injuries,” according to the Defense Ministry.

Military doctors fought for the life of sergeant Timoshenkov for several days at the air base at the Hmeymin airbase, however, he died on 16 June. It is specified that the command recommended Timoshenkov for a state award posthumously.

In late September 2015, Russia started its military operation in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. In mid-March 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered to withdraw Russian troops from Syrian territory, including the main part of the Russian aviation group, but the Russian military continued to carry out military tasks in the country. In particular, they helped Syrian government forces to liberate Palmyra.
